Extending the life of flooded systems

RS-45 is the only non-flammable & low toxicity refrigerant that can replace R22 in flooded evaporators in existing installations. R404A, R507, R410A, R407C, R134a, R422D, R438A and the new HFOs or HFO/HFC blends are ruled out by various combinations of high glide, high pressure and low capacity.

But RS-45 (R434A) has a Global Warming Potential (GWP) above the EU F Gas Regulation maximum of 2,500, so despite being the only refrigerant on the market which can suitably replace R22 in flooded systems it will no longer be permitted for this critical application from 2020.

Recognising this potential problem, Refrigerant Solutions LTD will make RS-90 available in 2020 to extend the operating life of installations that have already been converted from R22 to RS-45 (R434A). Since RS-90 contains the same components as RS-45 (R434A) there are no concerns about using RS-90 to top up systems containing RS-45 (R434A). The availability of RS-90 will enable existing installations to continue operating for at least another 5 to 10 years beyond the F Gas cut-off date of 2020. Many existing flooded systems are high capital cost installations engineered for 20+ year lifetimes. Often, they are integrated into large manufacturing plants where replacement would require considerable investment and incur high costs from lost production. The combination of RS-45 (R434A) and RS-90 enables these installations to continue in economically viable operation until 2030 and beyond.

Most importantly flooded systems must be first converted from R22 to RS-45 (R434A) before the EU imposed date of 2020. RS-90 is being deployed to extend the life of RS-45 (R434A) after this date but not before.
